How To Use A Walking Cane

Using a cane for the first time can be an intimidating task, and it's very understandable. After a lifetime of walking without assistance, relying on a cane can seem awkward and dangerous. The team behind the Walking Assistant empathizes with new cane users and would therefore like to offer the following tips on how to walk with one.

Before you can use a cane safely, you need to know how to select one that is the proper size. Fortunately, the Walking Assistant comes in three sizes: small, medium, and large. The cane that is right for you is the one whose handle sits perfectly at your wrist (while standing). Selecting the correct size cane is important; you will not receive full support if your cane is too big or too small.

Safety Tips on How to Use a Walking Cane
Once you've found the perfect sized cane, you've got to learn how to use it. It's recommended that you spend some time getting comfortable with it. Don't buy a cane on Monday morning and attempt a lengthy walk Monday afternoon. Instead, practice using it in a comfortable and familiar space (such as your home). Take slow and even steps while placing as much weight as necessary on the cane. Be mindful of which side of your body needs the most support and hold your cane in the opposite hand.

Using a cane can be extremely helpful and easy, but it does take some getting used to. We are well-versed in how to use a walking cane--our founder uses the Walking Assistant himself--and we welcome any questions you have. Please feel free to call or email us directly with questions or concerns.
